Stronger Oversight of Natural Gas Drilling
Tompkins County and the Southern Tier of NY sit on the Marcellus Shale — a large natural gas deposit. Gas drilling companies are fighting to drill using a poorly regulated and researched process called Hydraulic Fracturing. We won’t let them unless the proper regulations and oversight are in place.
There are many concerns about the Department of Environmental Conservation’s regulations over the Marcellus Shale. The proposed regulations are far too lax, do not account for the potential harm to the region’s water aquifers/supply, and do not address the problems drilling will cause with land use, highway infrastructure, and the overall quality of life in the area.
Nate voted for a resolution calling for the Department of Environmental Conservation to completely re-evaluate the process for drilling in the Marcellus Shale, and that no drilling be permitted using hydraulic fracturing unless an adequate environmental review is done. The Legislature voted unanimously for this resolution on December 15th, 2009. Here is the full press release about the resolution:
